With the technological revolution at its brink and new concepts taking birth, we are at the golden age of science and technology. 5G technology is one such brick in the wall of modern technology. 5G or the fifth generation of cellular networking is about to make its debut soon, but there are certain controversies behind this new wave of technology.
5G operates on radio frequency just like any other network, but because this technology is transmitting large amounts of data in less time, scientists and a few citizen groups are expressing concern that 5G base stations would emit large amounts of electromagnetic radiation.
We still are in the grey area when it comes to this technology, so what really is the 5G network? 5G technology is slated to replace the present-day 3G and 4G cellular telephone networks, while also speeding up the rate of data transfer by 100 times that of the fastest 4G network. This technology is said to reduce latency and power the cellular network to operate on far more devices than ever before.
This network’s technology operates by sending and receiving signals with the help of electromagnetic radiation or EMF. So not only are the towers a source for this radiation, but every device that will support 5G technology will emit the equally high EMF radiation overall. But is 5G radiation dangerous? Or is it just a big controversy to cover up another major flaw of this new technology? Let us take a closer look at the dangers of 5G technology…
Health Concerns From 5G Technology
With 5G technology we will be able to see a lot of new changes, like connecting at really high speeds with many devices at the same time, experimenting with new forms of energy, and newer, more sophisticated base stations. So let us see if 5G is really dangerous or if it is all just mass hysteria.
Keeping all the benefits aside, since cellular networks operate on EMF, theoretically the applications and speeds at which 5G seems to be higher than that of the 4G network. As soon as the network gets popular, the market will be filled with more devices and appliances that will support 5G as well, which means more devices that emit high radiations. This new technology will function on very high frequencies of electromagnetic waves that humans have never experienced before.
As of today, there have been no long term surveys done to indicate EMF radiation from the 5G network. Even with the potential risk of this network, there haven’t been any safety studies for the effect this network would have on the health of its users. Since that is still a grey area, we cannot conclude what long term effects this can have on the human body.
Because of the absence of study, we cannot risk taking the benefit of the doubt and let high radiation devices pollute us. Dr. Joel Moskowitz from UC Berkeley School of Public Health has explained, “we have no reason to believe that 5G is safe.”
Unlike its previous generations, 5G is a different type of EMF radiation. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has coined this range of EMF as a Class 2B carcinogen, which means that there is still no evidence of the results of this type of radiation on any animal or human. However, some research shows that this level of EMF is genotoxic, meaning that it has the potential to destroy human DNA.
A US National Toxicology Program that released the result from a $30 million study concluded that there was “clear evidence” that this kind of exposure to cell phone radiation increases the chances of cancer and genetic damage in mice. But cancer is not the only fatal effect. Multiple peer-reviewed scientific studies demonstrated that exposure to this level of radiation can result in nausea, low energy, bone marrow damage, depression, infections, confusion, hair loss, appetite loss, and constant swellings.
